Legacies Bio Urn – Planting & Burial Instructions

The Legacies Bio Urn was created to provide an affordable, biodegradable memorial option in South Africa. It allows you to honour a loved one by returning them to nature. No headstone is needed — a living tree becomes the memorial, contributing positively to the environment.

Before You Begin

  • Separate the top section (Grow Module) from the bottom section (Ash Urn).
  • Remove the lid from the Grow Module and set it aside.

Preparing the Grow Module:

Option 1: Planting a Seed

  1. The Grow Module contains cocopeat.
  2. Slowly add 100–150 ml of water to the cocopeat and allow it to sit for 10 minutes.
  3. Using the wooden stick provided (found in the family file), gently break up the cocopeat.
  4. Add small amounts of water if needed.
    Important: The cocopeat should be moist and crumbly — not muddy.
  5. Remove any excess cocopeat and level the surface.
  6. Plant the supplied tree seed (or a seed of your choice):
    • Make a small hole about knuckle depth.
    • Place the seed inside and cover it lightly with cocopeat.
  7. Place the Grow Module on top of the urn lid (used as a stand during germination).
  8. Keep the cocopeat consistently moist while the seed sprouts.
    Sprouting may take up to 4 weeks, depending on weather conditions.
Option 2: Planting a Seedling
  1. Prepare the cocopeat using the same method as above.
  2. Make enough space for the soil around the seedling.
  3. Place the seedling and surrounding soil into the cocopeat and gently firm it in place.
  4. Keep the cocopeat moist while the seedling establishes itself.

Preparing the Urn for Burial

Once the plant is established (approximately 10 cm tall with at least 4 leaves), it is ready for burial.

  1. Remove the Grow Module from the stand. (used during germination)
  2. Remove the cork lid from the Ash Urn.
  3. Place the Grow Module back onto the Ash Urn — the two sections will slide together securely.

Burial

Your Bio Urn is now ready to be planted.

  • Choose a meaningful location such as a garden, forest, or special natural area.
  • Dig a hole deep enough to fully cover the urn.
  • Place the entire Bio Urn into the ground and cover with soil. The seedling will be above ground, while the Bio Urn is completely buried.
  • Water well after planting.

Over time, the urn will naturally biodegrade, and the ashes will provide nutrients to the growing plant. The tree or plant will stand as a living memorial, symbolising renewal, life, and remembrance.
